  1. Are you a scientist seeking to be a more effective communicator of your scientific expertise?
  2. Are you a college professor or university outreach coordinator searching for proven methods to prepare future scientists (graduate and undergraduate students) to communicate their science knowledge?
  3. Are you a college professor, post doc or grad student in a science discipline interested in improving your own teaching practice?
  4. Are you an informal science educator looking to partner with a scientist and future scientists to provide more science to visitors to your institution?

If any of these questions are interesting to you, come check out the Communicating Sciences Workshop. This workshop is a yearlong, blended learning experience that is based on the nationally recognized Communicating Ocean Sciences college courses developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley. All scientists, science faculty, and university outreach coordinators, as well as teams of informal educators and science faculty are welcomed to participate.

What is the workshop about?
The Communicating Sciences Workshop begins with a two-day face-to-face meeting in Berkeley, CA in June 11-12, 2012. The learning continues throughout the year with three whole group online, interactive discussions and individual consultations with workshop instructors. Participants engage in adult learning experiences, read and discuss research on how people learn and how to support learning, examine one another’s practice, and identify and practice new methods for teaching and designing educational materials.

All participants will have the opportunity to apply what they learn. For example, participants may choose to engage in one of the following activities, or other activities of their choice:

  • Teach a Communicating Sciences course: Communicating Science, Communicating Ocean Sciences to K-12 Audiences, Communicating Ocean Sciences to Informal Audiences. These university courses are designed to introduce graduate and undergraduate science students to research on learning, and help these future scientists to be more effective communicators of their scientific knowledge. Visit http://cos-rop.net/cos to learn more about the college courses.
  • Revise or redesign an existing college course or series of lessons. The course and lessons may be something you have taught or plan to teach, and you are interested in getting input from peers on how to design and refine them to be more effective.

The activities most often involve a scientist and educator working together so that they may share their expertise and learn from one another.

What do I have to gain?
This workshop is designed to:

  1. foster relationships between scientists and science educators in a local community to help each achieve their goals for sharing science with their respective audiences;
  2. be a practical learning experience for scientists interested in improving their teaching and communication practice; and
  3. help scientists to design more effective broader impact activities

Upon completion of all workshop activities, participants can receive a Certificate of Recognition from the University of California, Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science that acknowledges the knowledge and experiences gained from this workshop.

How much does this workshop cost?
Registration fees for this workshop are $325; inclusive of two-day face-to-face workshop, online discussions and consultations, all course materials and breakfast and lunch during the workshop.

Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements and costs, though we can provide recommendations.
