About the 2.5-Day Workshop…
This workshop at the University of California Berkeley's Lawrence Hall of Science is designed for scientist/science educator teams that plan to co-teach the undergraduate and graduate course, Communicating Ocean Sciences or Communicating Ocean Sciences to Informal Audiences. During this 2.5-day workshop we will provide you with:
- Complete syllabus and instructor's guide;
- A full set of curricula for students to take into local classrooms or COSIA activity write-ups that students can use in informal learning environments;
- Correlations of course curriculum to pedagogy and National Science Education Standards;
- Sample documentation to get the course listed at your site;
- Ongoing technical assistance to ensure successful implementation of the course.
You will be introduced to each of the class sessions, then we will
help
you to customize the syllabus for your local setting and needs.
"Co-teaching the class has been fun and gratifying. It is great to have the opportunity to think beyond the typical college lecture format. I have incorporated some of the sessions into my other marine science classes, and my teaching skills have definitely improved, particularly my ability to lead successful class discussions."

About the Course…
The Communicating Ocean Sciences (COS) and the Communicating Ocean Sciences to Informal Audiences (COSIA) courses were developed by a team of scientists and marine education specialists at UC Berkeley and The Lawrence Hall of Science. The courses provide students with an introduction to the inquiry-based pedagogy used in theoretically grounded science education reform and builds on their interest in and knowledge of ocean sciences. COS and COSIA are designed for undergraduate and graduate students in the sciences and are appropriate for students with a broad range of science backgrounds. Content supplements are provided to accommodate the diverse backgrounds of the students. The COS course includes an "outreach" component in which pairs of students observe and then teach a 6-session (1-2 hours/week over 6 weeks) marine science unit of their choosing in a local K-6 classroom. The course has won awards for its innovative design and is widely recognized as a model for promoting ocean science literacy. In fact, there are currently over 20 universities and institutions who offer (or will soon offer) COS or COSIA nationwide! Our newest course, Communicating Ocean Sciences to Informal Audiences (COSIA), is teaching students about the learning theories and pedagogical approaches that relate to learning in informal environments. COSIA students do outreach in local museums, science centers, aquariums or marine labs. COSIA provides students with opportunities to directly engage broad audiences of learners in an exciting and rapidly changing learning environment. Visit our FAQ page for more information.
"I'm really glad to have worked with my teaching partner, someone I did not know before. Not only did I gain great experience from the course itself, but also a great friend. Our teaching styles worked really well together. We also enjoyed what we did, and this is probably why our experience is so valuable and meaningful. I have formed a connection with the students and the classroom teacher that is priceless and am inspired and motivated to do something like this again."

Communicating Ocean Sciences
The goals of the course are:
- to introduce diverse future ocean scientists to the importance of formal (K-12) and informal (aquarium, etc.) education and public outreach;
- to provide future ocean scientists with tools to communicate effectively the "Broader Impact" of their work to non-ocean scientists;
- to introduce diverse undergrad students in science degree programs to possible careers in K-12 teaching or to possible careers in informal learning environments;
- to promote thoughtful, mutually beneficial collaborations between ocean scientists, educators and informal learning specialists co-teaching the course that will lead to effective educational outreach;
- to provide significant ocean science instruction and college-age role models for underrepresented learners.
Attend the June 2-4, 2008 workshop to prepare to teach future generations of ocean scientists how to communicate their understanding of and passion for the ocean realm.
