More
about COSEE CA partnering institutions:
Scripps Institution
of Oceanography (SIO) is one of the world’s
premiere oceanographic research institutions in the world. SIO
scientists conduct research in all parts of the world in the
earth and atmospheric sciences as well as the complete range
of oceanographic disciplines. The Birch
Aquarium at Scripps (BAS), charged with public outreach for SIO, works with school
and public programs closely tied to the research conducted at
SIO. Scientists and educators from SIO and BAS will be involved
in all four of COSEE CA's initiatives, but will lead Initiative
One and take a primary role in Initiative Four.
Lawrence Hall
of Science (LHS) is a national leader in the
development and support of science and mathematics curriculum
for grades
preK-12. GEMS, FOSS, MARE, Family Math, EQUALS, SEPUP, and
OBIS are only several of the many LHS projects that test new,
cutting
edge instructional materials and provide one in five children
in the U.S with science and math instructional tools. Marine
Activities Resources and Education (MARE) is a K-8 ocean science
curriculum and professional development project, designed
to meet the needs of English language learners and other underrepresented
students. Over 500 schools have implemented the MARE program
across the U.S., in Mexico and Finland. MARE will serve as
our
informal education partner, will lead Initiatives Two and
Four, and will operate the Center Office.
Marine Advanced Technology
Education (MATE) Center is a national
partnership of educational institutions working to improve
marine technical education in the U.S. and to meet the workplace
needs
of America’s marine-related workforce and employers. Headquartered
at the Monterey Peninsula College, the MATE Center has developed
occupational guidelines, curriculum modules, internship programs,
and competencies to support marine technical career opportunities.
MATE is our formal education partner, and will lead Initiative
Three.
California Sea Grant (CA
SG) College Program funds research
in coastal ocean studies, aquaculture, fisheries, new marine
products, ocean engineering, marine affairs, marine ecology,
and marine technology. The largest of the 30 Sea Grant programs
nationally, it is administered by the University of California
and is based at SIO. CA Sea Grant requires no funding through
COSEE, but will be deeply involved with Initiative One, and
provide support to all four initiatives.
